What you need to know

What is a pre-paid sub-meter?

A prepaid sub-meter is a device that enables the meter owner to monitor the electricity consumption by the tenant or occupier.

How does the sub-meter function?

A prepaid sub-meter does not replace the main electricity meter or any meter installed by the relevant electricity provider in any way. Sub-meters facilitate prepaid
consumption of electricity. Vouchers or tokens are purchased by the tenant or
occupier, from one of our retailers or online, or directly from the meter owner,
and are loaded on the sub-meter.

For continued usage of the Recharger prepaid sub-meter, tenants or occupiers must ensure that there is a credit on the Recharger Prepaid Sub-Meter. The value of the vouchers purchased are reimbursed to the meter owner which should be used to pay towards the meter owner’s electricity bill.

What are the benefits of a prepaid sub-meter?

Prepaid sub-meters facilitate prepaid consumption of electricity by the tenant or occupier, and allow the meter owner to be reimbursed for electricity purchases. Sub-meters also allow tenants or occupiers to monitor their electricity usage.

Where can I purchase prepaid electricity vouchers?

Vouchers can be purchased from various retail outlets (such as Pick n Pay, Shoprite Checkers and Spar) and on most major banks’ banking apps (such as FNB, Absa, and Capitec). Vouchers can also be purchased online on Recharger’s Pay Portal.
